Beacon Station Barotrauma

beacon station barotrauma
Barotrauma takes place several hundred years in the future. In this time, humanity has established several colonies on Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons.

Due to the deadly amounts of radiation on the surface of the moon, the colonies are constructed under its icy crust. The vast subsurface ocean under the crust is used as a transport route between the colonies and a source of natural resources. In Barotrauma, the player will step into the boots of a recruit on board a submarine traveling in the subsurface ocean. The player’s job is to keep the submarine operational, while carrying out various tasks to earn funds for buying supplies and hiring new crew members. Maintaining and operating the submarine itself isn’t the only challenge, as the ocean is filled with bizarre creatures ranging from harmless small fish to gigantic horrors more than capable of destroying the entire vessel.

Barotrauma’s time period takes place several hundred years in a future, during an era where humanity is technologically advanced enough to achieve manned interplanetary space travel.

The setting of the game is on Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons, which has become colonized during the space age. Due to the surface of the planet being too irradiated for survival, colonies and outposts have been established under the layer of ice which covers the surface of the moon. Beneath the ice layer is a vast ocean used as a transport network between colonies and as a source for natural resources. The ocean also allowed for the creation of transportation shafts which interconnect the colonies throughout the moon.

The ocean itself is inhabited by a number of aquatic creatures, as well as natural forming cave systems.

Barotrauma takes place several hundred years in the future. In this time, humanity has established various colonies on multiple planets.

The game takes place on Europa, one of Jupiter’s moon Europa. Due to the deadly amounts of radiation on the surface of the moon several colonies have been established under its icy crust. The vast subsurface ocean under the crust is used as a transport route between the colonies and a source of natural resources. Many research facilities and defence outposts have been established near several transportation shafts leading from the colonies down into the ocean.

The game takes place in a submarine traveling in the subsurface ocean. The player’s job is to keep the submarine operational, while carrying out various tasks to earn funds for buying supplies and hiring new crew members.

Along with this, the player must also watch out for monsters that inhabit the ocean. Due to the location, replacement parts and other supplies are difficult to come by, so the facility is filled with makeshift equipment and poorly repaired systems. This makes keeping the submarine in a stable state much more difficult.

Artifacts is the term given to a series of relics left behind by extraterrestrials on Europa. They are frequent targets of salvage missions in Quest Mode, and are potential sources of rare raw materials. Both the origin of these artifacts and their purpose is unknown.
Every generated level in Barotrauma contains an artifact somewhere. This implies their creators must have been incredibly prevalent in this section of Europa.

Husks:
Velonaceps Calyx Eggs
description=”Dormant eggs of the Europan lifeform colloquially referred to as ‘husk parasite’.”

The most common way to get infected is an encounter with an active husk, but some well-equipped laboratories and research facilities may also house dormant husk eggs.

Once infected, you may have trouble swallowing and your throat may feel sore. It is generally not a good idea to tell your fellow crew members about these symptoms, as it would most likely lead to a medical inspection and a dose of antiparasitic drugs. As the parasite grows, you may also find it hard or impossible to speak. If so, try to stay away from other people to prevent arousing suspicion.

When the parasite reaches maturity, it extends its ovipositor out of your throat. The feeling may be somewhat unpleasant. At this stage it is highly recommended to wear a diving mask or other headgear to hide the ovipositor from the rest of the crew.

The parasite will slowly start taking over your entire nervous system, but this process can be delayed by working together with the parasite by spreading eggs into new hosts. Just find a suitable target and gently insert the ovipositor into one of their body cavities.

The parasite has taken over your body.

“In the first test, the test subject infected itself withh the Velonaceps Calyx eggs, once. He immediately felt the prementioned symptoms.
After ~2:30 minutes, he entered the second stage, which muted him.
After another ~2:30 minutes, he entered stage three, and fell unconscious ~3 minutes and 10 seconds afterwards, dying ~1:10 minutes later. The parasite took over at that point.”

“Test 1: Subject 1 Rendered unconscious (Shot several times using a harpoon gun) then injected with Velonaceps Calys eggs, while being on the verge of death.
Result: Shortly after the injection, the subject died and the parasite immediately took over. It is presumed that the speed at which the parasite matures depends on the life state of its host. (In other words, it matures extremely fast if its host dies.)”

Death: Upon entering the third stage, the host continuosly takes damage, until, he falls unconcious, and dies, allowing the parasite to take over.
It was concluded that, whenever someone is infected, the immediate termination merely leads to the parasite taking control instantaniously, regardless of the stage the host is in at the moment, leading to possibly more infections, or deaths.

Curing: In stage 1, the process can be stopped immediately by injecting Calyxanide.
Upon stage 2, Calxanide will still provide a cure.
If someone entered stage three, Calyxanide proves to be ineffective, ultimately leading to the hosts death, and the parasite taking control.

Barotrauma is an online multiplayer game heavily inspired by Space Station 13. The game takes place in a submarine travelling through the icy depths of Jupiter’s moon Europa. The bone-crushing pressure outside the submarine, the strange creatures inhabiting the ocean and the potentially dangerous equipment and machines on board ensure that the tiniest slip can turn the game into a chaotic struggle for survival.

Take command of the crew as the captain, take responsibility of keeping the submarine operational as an engineer or a mechanic, save lives as a medical officer or keep the submarine safe from external and internal threats as a security officer.

The subsurface ocean of Europa is a dangerous place. The icy waters are inhabited by bizarre creatures ranging from harmless fish to enormous bloodthirsty horrors, and from biomechanical alien sentinels to human divers taken over by a strange parasitic lifeform. The ocean itself is also a major threat, as the pressure can crush an unprotected submarineer in seconds.

The environments of the game are procedurally generated. The crew must navigate their way through underwater chasms and caverns, and occasionally leave the safety of their vessel to salvage artifacts from labyrinthian alien ruins.
