welcome on board!

syntaxerror [11:41 AM]
how many systems are you supporting in yours?

dderusha [11:42 AM]
Right now we have 1,000 macs on casper, 2,000 unmanaged macs and about 5-6k PC’s. I haven’t worked at all with the PC’s but they need management as they have nothing now.

syntaxerror [11:44 AM]
a I see

ah

dderusha [11:44 AM]
lots of work to do this year

syntaxerror [11:45 AM]
that is what we are doing now for the PC here at the company, testing deployments with FileWave, so far I love it more than what we have currently… dell KACE

dderusha [11:46 AM]
I’m kinda disappointed with the Filewave community though…. not much action on their support community site…..
macadmins slack read more macadmins slack

[11:47]
we looked at kace too and that wouldn’t help us

syntaxerror [11:47 AM]
Yeah that was my first impression as well, but I have been in talks with them and they are moving their pieces now to wake up the community

[11:47]
I run a site called enterpriseosx.com that I posted a lot of content for filewave, but now I am migrating it into a separate community all together to see if I can jumpstart it…

syntaxerror [11:50 AM]
they are a good bunch but the tech support guys are swamped helping their customers and can’t spread too thin…. but I love their support its completely top notch.

[11:50]
that is why im trying to help from the side.

colin [11:54 AM]
We jumped ship partly for that reason. Good support with FileWave was hard to come by, where as with JAMF I met four real living people before even purchasing.

syntaxerror [11:57 AM]
macadmins slack read more macadmins slack
what do you mean good support from filewave was hard to come by?

[11:58]
What I liked about FW was that its really not that complicated to run, I rarely use support but when I do, usually for something big I am trying to do, they respond really fast and they go knee deep with me and we have solved any problem in place.

[12:00]
I was trying to jumpstart an external community, I have the blog set at www.filewaveadmins.com and a slack server at slack.filewaveadmins.com but I really haven’t had the time to merge the enterpriseosx.com site into this and push it over. I am talking to some people in Filewave to see if they sponsor the site and I can get it going…

[12:00]
it would be cool and it would definitely jumpstart things.

colin [12:00 PM]
The lack of phone support, one day turn around on Joomla-based tickets, lack of documentation, and the guy usually responding to our tickets wasn’t really giving us answers either.

syntaxerror [12:00 PM]
but I have so much work.

[12:01]
huh I get phone support anytime I want

macadmins slack read more macadmins slack
[12:01]
I just express i need to a tech to call me to discuss and they call me…

[12:01]
the joomla based ticket system is pretty crappy i will give you that.

[12:01]
and the knowledgebase they are polishing it now…

colin [12:02 PM]
macadmins slack website macadmins slack
I never was offered it, even after specifically asking. I had one TeamViewer session where a guy just re-did everything I said I did in the ticket.

syntaxerror [12:02 PM]
all these points they are working on them now, but they dont really help them a lot.

dderusha [12:02 PM]
which is nice, but we need this now

syntaxerror [12:02 PM]
right.

they are aware, and they are working on it.

dderusha [12:02 PM]
like I said we are a casper customer now

[12:02]
and there are unlimited resources

macadmins slack website macadmins slack
[12:03]
I tried to find training schedules are there is nothing

syntaxerror [12:03 PM]
A big item on my list of wishes was hoping their site was browsable from the internet so you had more options to research when looking at a problem and just now they did it.

[12:03]
they are also working on that

[12:04]
macadmins slack website macadmins slack
I tested a lot of products before I moved the company to FileWave, and granted their back end document-support wise is not the best, but their personal support has been great.

dderusha [12:04 PM]
makes me really nervous moving from our current system and also having to re-make every package is going to take a lot of people hours

syntaxerror [12:04 PM]
Just yesterday I was talking to their marketing dept. about how they ned to fix all these things…

colin [12:04 PM]
Yeah, we switched because we needed everything now, not the promise of documentation and support later.
macadmins slack click here macadmins slack

syntaxerror [12:04 PM]
it happens I can see how that is an inconvenience.

[12:05]
but I have been able to catermyself of support and it hasnt been difficult to work our architecture with them.

[12:05]
comparing what we had with Dell KACE and moving into Filewave things are a breeze now in the company

colin [12:07 PM]
I won’t deny that FileWave works well, it was everything other than the software that killed it for us.

syntaxerror [12:09 PM]
See for me the experience with casper was horrific

[12:09]
from the sales approach

[12:09]
macadmins slack read more macadmins slack
to begin with it was horrible.

[12:10]
there were pretty unreasonable when we were trying to get a PoC running.

[12:10]
When I signed up for Filewave, I told their guy I need 20 licenses for 1 month so we can test, and they were like, “gimme 1 day and I will hook you up” and boom.

dderusha [12:11 PM]
with casper i download a java JDK .pkg…….drop it into casper admin……its now in my amazon bucket……then I sync my distribution points and its on all the local networks too…..I change my old policy to use the new package jsut loaded and flush the log. takes me 5 minutes. how long does this same task take and how many steps does it take in filewave?
macadmins slack click here macadmins slack

[12:11]
@syntaxerror: not sure what sales guy you got, but I had a unlimited license for over a year with casper

[12:11]
before we bought

colin [12:12 PM]
I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s a regional issue. The guys here in the PNW were really friendly and helpful. I had an unlimited license trial deployment, and they extended it two or three times since they knew I was hooked. Lol

syntaxerror [12:12 PM]
no they wanted to sell us the PoC

[12:12]
for like $6K

[12:12]
I literally laughed in her face.

dderusha [12:12 PM]
whats PoC?

I was like you dont go to Mercedes Benz and pay 5K to test drive a Benz

Proof of Concept.

[12:13]
We wanted to setup Casper on our Test lab so we could test deployment and see if it was what we were looking for

[12:13]
they made it impossible for us to test, 3 months just to get a PoC going… It took me 24hrs on a holiday to get it going with FW.

dderusha [12:14 PM]
you must of had a bad sales person. JAMF has given me anything I wanted or needed always

dderusha [12:16 PM]
we have a somewhat complex setup using a main server being the firewall, connecting to the DMZ server only for SQL reads and we deliver no matter where the users are inside, outside, at home etc….. using LDAP authentication and using our wild card cert.

[12:16]
how long do you think that would take ….. ball park. best guess

syntaxerror [12:18 PM]
not long, that is how our biggest setup is

[12:18]
macadmins slack read more macadmins slack
we have our FWV server sitting in front of the DMZ with only the ports it needs open, and

[12:18]
I work for Univision, the TV Network

[12:19]
so our network is divided between broadcast and Corporate

[12:19]
corporate is behind the firewall and broadcast is on the DMZ
macadmins slack here macadmins slack

[12:20]
so our server is sitting on the DMZ supporting engineering and supporting corporate

[12:20]
it works great

[12:20]
the new server is going to get migrated to a linux box, to handle the big kahuna

I was able to get Filewave compatible with Autopkgr and I that has sped up thrid party support by a ton.

[12:21]
the autopkgr that will support imprt to filewave is on RC2 right now.

[12:22]
@colin you mentioned you are in PWE what is that?

syntaxerror [12:24 PM]
this is the RC2 for 1.4 Autopkgr that will support recipes for Filewave: https://github.com/lindegroup/autopkgr/releases/download/v1.4-rc2/AutoPkgr-1.4rc2.zip

[12:26]
right now im trying to make a script to convert recipes for into .filewave format so they can be imported straight into the FW Admin… I have been having a hit and miss some scripts import and others dont but I am pretty sure I will get something running soon ish

dderusha [12:26 PM]
I saw that as well.. gave us some hope
macadmins slack get more info macadmins slack

syntaxerror [12:28 PM]
that has been my push, and this is what Ilike about FW the most, is that we have a good relationship with them where we have brought them real world scenarios and they like making us (and by that I mean as their customers, making their customers happy) and they provide support to things we put in the table, somethings take time, but they get done. I feel as a customer I am important to them, and it reflects in our relationship with them.

dderusha [12:29 PM]
nice

syntaxerror [12:30 PM]
we have been lucky to have a line to upper management at their company, and we are not the largest client they have, I am pretty sure we are small (at least before bringing the windows side forward), but I can shoot an email to their CTO and the dude replies to me in an engaging conversation, and whatever we discuss with him we feel comfortable that its not that we have their ear, but its comfortable to know you can bring a point, and important point to their table and they will listen to you and if it causes a positive effect they work it out to make it happen.

macadmins slack here macadmins slack
[12:31]
you dont really get that anywhere… (and im not saying the competition doesn’t I mean in general….) we sat once with Dell whom we paid 300K per year on contracts of 3 yrs and they laughed in our face when we asked them to remove a stupid button from KACE…

[12:31]
No body is perfect and FW has some things they need to work on, but their customer relations are superb.
